Harden drops first
CHICAGO — A spell of wildness in the first inning got Oakland right-hander Rich Harden off of the wrong foot Sunday in a 4-3 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
A two-out throwing error put Carlos Quentin on first base, and Harden then gave up a single to Jermaine Dye before walking Jim Thome and Joe Crede to force in a run. “I threw a lot of pitches in that first inning, which definitely cost me an inning,” said Harden, a Victoria product who suffered his first defeat this season. “It seemed like there were always runners on in every inning.”
WHITE SOX 4, ATHLETICS 3
CHICAGO — John Danks set a careerhigh with nine strikeouts, and Chicago handed Rich Harden (5-1) his first loss in a year, hanging on to beat Oakland for its 10th win in 13 games.
The A’s got a run against Scott Linebrink in the ninth to pull within one, but Jack Cust flied out to right with runners on first and second to end the game.
Danks (6-4) took a no-hitter into the sixth as the White Sox salvaged a fourgame split after dropping the first two.
Harden struggled with his control in his first loss since last July 7.
